What are JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF files?

JPG · JPEG image

JPG (also written JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. It uses lossy compression and has no transparency, which makes it ideal for photos you want to share anywhere.

PNG · Portable Network Graphics

PNG is a lossless image format with full transparency support. It's great for screenshots, logos and graphics, but photos saved as PNG are usually much larger than JPG.

WebP · Google WebP image

WebP is Google's web image format. Websites love it because files are small, but many desktop apps, print services and older software still can't open it.

AVIF · AV1 Image File Format

AVIF is a modern image format built on the AV1 video codec. It produces much smaller files than JPG at similar quality, but older apps, editors and upload forms often refuse it.

Common questions about the image compressor

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. uqln runs the conversion inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device, which also means there's no upload wait and no size limit beyond your device's memory.

Is it really free?

Yes. There's no account, no watermark and no daily limit. Because the work happens on your device, it costs us almost nothing to run.

Can I convert many JPG/PNG/WebP/AVIF files at once?

Yes. Drop as many files as you like. They're converted one after another, and you can download them individually or all together as a ZIP.
